I once lived for about thirty days in mystery lake before finding the three hatchets I had missed. I had checked everywhere... Except the lower level of the dam, except one of the fishing huts, except the corpse near the trapper lodge. Basically just hold out. I had a hammer though, so I had reclaimed wood.The fishing huts (esp. those with doors) are needed vs. cabin fever. No great options for caves on this map.
